Machine Shop Lathe Setter Operator

Job Overview:

As a Machine Shop Lathe Setter Operator, you will play a crucial role in the production process. Responsibilities include setting up machines, controlling and adjusting settings, feeding raw materials, and inspecting parts with precision tools. Periodic testing of machine operations, addressing issues during the shift, and ensuring product quality are essential. Utilizing cranes and forklifts, you’ll contribute to maintaining a smooth production cycle, keeping detailed records of unit output, and actively participating in quality assurance processes.

Responsibilities:

  • Understand, implement and follow all relevant procedures included in the Company’s Quality Manual.
  • Become fully conversant with, set up, load, unload and operate safely and efficiently, machinery, tools and equipment.
  • Produce components in accordance with layouts, drawings, sketches, production orders or verbal instructions; working to the stated limits of tolerance.
  • Complete time sheets, production returns, absence forms, holiday request forms etc. and pass promptly to Production Supervisor.
  • Carry out machine maintenance work according to skills and physical capabilities.
  • Use computer terminal to enquire and input details of operations, orders, parts, procedures, products, samples, services, stock, suppliers, time, tooling, etc.
  • Participate in physical counting of stock and investigate discrepancies. Help maintain an accurate record of goods in the warehouse and elsewhere.
  • Assist with, and where appropriate carry out, the training of other members of staff.
  • Advise Production Supervisor on the suitability and effectiveness of existing plant, equipment and staff. Make recommendations for the development or procurement of alternatives or additions.
  • Attend meetings and training sessions as required.
  • Establish and maintain friendly relationships with colleagues and staff. Exude a courteous and helpful manner to any person with whom he/she may come into contact in the course of his/her work.
  • In addition to the above specific duties the Production Supervisor, Production Controller, Departmental Manager or Production Engineer may allocate other duties as skills and work requirements dictate.

Education/Work Experience Requirements:

  • Production Apprenticeship or evidence of equivalent appropriate training. (e.g. NVQs, ONC ) minimum
  • Knowledge of factory/machine shop practices.
  • Ability to read and work to engineering drawings.
  • Previous setting / programming knowledge of CNC lathes
  • Previous Fanuc CNC lathe experience

Working Hours:

Day shift: Total = 40hrs

Mon-Thurs 7.30am – 4.30pm (unpaid 0.5hr lunch) (2x 15mins paid Tea breaks)

Friday 7.30am – 1.30pm (1x 15mins paid Tea break)

Early shift: Total = 40hrs

Mon-Fri 6am – 2pm (paid 0.5hr lunch)

Late shift:  Total = 40hrs

Mon-Thurs 2pm -11pm =36 hrs (paid 0.5hr lunch)

Fri 2pm – 6pm = 4 hrs

Shift premium payment: Early: £5.00 per day

Late:  £10.00 per day (4 days only)

At times of increased demand shift work will be required plus overtime and potential nightshift where necessary.
